Binary versus decimal storage
Operating systems and vendors may display storage differently. This converter uses 1024-based binary multiples, which is common in many computer contexts.
Example
1 GB in this converter equals 1,024 MB, 1,048,576 KB and 1,073,741,824 bytes.
Common mistakes
Drive manufacturers often use decimal units, where 1 GB is 1,000,000,000 bytes. That is one reason usable storage can look smaller in an operating system.
Limitations
This converter does not estimate formatted capacity, filesystem overhead, compression, transfer speed or cloud storage billing units.
