Grade scales differ
The letter grade shown uses a simple 90/80/70/60 scale. Schools, teachers, exams and countries can use different cutoffs, weighting or curved grading.
Example
If you earned 42 points out of 50, the percentage is 42 / 50 x 100 = 84%. On a simple 90/80/70/60 scale, that usually maps to a B range.
Common mistakes
Do not compare two test scores unless the total possible points are considered. Missing 5 points on a 20-point quiz is very different from missing 5 points on a 100-point exam.
Limitations
Use the percentage for the most portable interpretation, then compare it with the grading policy for the course or assessment.
