Perimeter vs area
Perimeter measures distance around the edge. Area measures the surface inside the rectangle. Use perimeter for borders, trim, fencing or edging; use area when you need to cover the surface.
Example
A rectangle that is 12 units long and 8 units wide has a perimeter of 2 x (12 + 8) = 40 units. Its diagonal is different: it is the straight-line distance from one corner to the opposite corner.
Common mistakes
Use the same unit for length and width before calculating. If length is in meters and width is in centimeters, convert one of them first. Do not multiply length by width when you need perimeter; that gives area.
Limitations
This calculator assumes a true rectangle with four right angles. Irregular rooms, rounded corners and openings may need a drawing or a more detailed material estimate.
