How to use the result
The percent tells you how large the numerator is compared with the denominator. In a test score, 3 correct answers out of 8 would be 37.5%.
Common mistakes
Keep the denominator as the total or whole. If the numbers are two separate parts of a ratio, add the parts first before converting one part to a percent of the whole.
Limitations
The denominator cannot be zero. Negative signs are preserved mathematically, so -1 / 4 becomes -25%.
