Flooring Box Calculator

Estimate how many flooring boxes to buy after waste allowance.

Waste allowance

Flooring projects commonly need extra material for cuts, pattern matching, damaged pieces and future repairs. Complex layouts, diagonal patterns and small rooms with many corners usually need a larger allowance.

Example

For 420 square feet of floor area, 22 square feet per box and 10% waste, the adjusted area is 462 square feet. 462 divided by 22 is 21 boxes after rounding up.

Before buying

Check the manufacturer's listed coverage per box and buy enough from the same batch or lot when color matching matters. If the product may be discontinued, one extra box can be useful for later repairs.

Limitations

This calculator does not optimize board layout, stair cuts, transition strips, underlayment, adhesive or manufacturer batch matching.
