Why tire diameter matters
Changing tire diameter can affect speedometer reading, gearing, braking systems, traction-control assumptions and physical clearance. Small differences are often manageable, but vehicle-specific limits matter.
Example
Comparing 225/45R17 with 235/45R17 shows how a wider tire with the same aspect ratio also has a slightly taller sidewall. The calculator converts both sizes to estimated diameter and reports the percentage change.
Common mistakes
Do not compare only rim size. Width and aspect ratio can change overall diameter even when the wheel diameter stays the same.
Limitations
This is a geometric comparison, not an approval for fitment. Check clearance, load rating, speed rating, wheel width and vehicle manufacturer guidance before changing sizes.
