Surface Area Calculator

Calculate the outside area of a sphere, cylinder or rectangular prism.

For a sphere use radius only. For a cylinder use radius and height. For a rectangular prism use length, width and height.

What surface area means

Surface area measures the outside of a three-dimensional object. It is often used for coating, wrapping, heat transfer estimates and geometry homework.

Example

A rectangular prism with length 5, width 4 and height 3 has surface area 2(5 x 4 + 5 x 3 + 4 x 3) = 94 square units.

Common mistakes

Surface area is measured in square units, not cubic units. It is different from volume, which measures the space inside the shape.

Limitations

The result assumes ideal geometric shapes. Real objects with bevels, openings, texture or irregular surfaces need a more detailed model.
