Rice to Water Ratio Calculator

Estimate how much water to use for common rice types.

Why ratios vary

Rice age, rinsing, soaking, lid fit, altitude, pot shape and rice cooker behavior can change the ideal ratio. Brown rice usually needs more water and time because the bran layer remains intact.

Example

If a rice type uses a 1.5:1 water-to-rice ratio, 2 cups of rice need 3 cups of water. If package directions differ, use the package directions first.

Common mistakes

Do not mix dry rice cups and cooked rice cups. The input is uncooked rice amount, before the rice absorbs water.

Limitations

Use this as a planning estimate, then adjust for your pot, cooker, soaking time and preferred texture.
