Perpendicular height
The height in the volume formula is the perpendicular distance from the base to the tip, not the sloped side.
Example
For a cone with radius 3 and height 10, volume is pi x 3 x 3 x 10 / 3, or about 94.25 cubic units.
How to use the result
Use volume for capacity or material estimates when the shape is close to a cone. Use slant height and surface area when estimating covering material for the outside.
Common mistakes
Do not use diameter as radius. If the base measures 6 across, the radius is 3. Also keep radius and height in the same unit.
