Before ordering carpet
Carpet layout depends on seams, pile direction, stairs, closets and pattern repeat. Use this as an early estimate before a measured layout.
Example
A 15 ft by 12 ft room is 180 square feet. With 10% waste, the adjusted estimate is 198 square feet. With a 12 ft roll width, that is about 16.5 linear feet before installer-specific layout decisions.
Common mistakes
Do not measure only visible floor if carpet will run into closets or under transitions. Patterned carpet and seam placement can require more material than a simple rectangle suggests.
Limitations
This calculator does not choose seam locations, stairs, underlay, thresholds or installer cuts. Confirm final quantities with the supplier or installer before ordering.
