Material volume

Gravel Volume Calculator

Estimate gravel volume from length, width, depth and waste.

Depth conversion

If length and width are feet, depth must also be in feet. Convert 3 inches to 0.25 feet before calculating.

Example

A 20 by 10 area with 0.25 feet of gravel has a base volume of 50 cubic feet. With 10% waste, plan for about 55 cubic feet before converting to bags, tons or cubic yards.

Common mistakes

Gravel is often sold by weight, but this calculator estimates volume. Density varies by stone type, moisture, compaction and supplier, so a volume-to-weight conversion should use local material data.

Limitations

Bulk material ordering may depend on compaction, density, moisture, sub-base condition and supplier rounding.
