Example
If current salary is 70,000, current monthly costs are 4,000 and new monthly costs are 4,800, the equivalent salary estimate is 70,000 x 4,800 / 4,000 = 84,000.
Common mistakes
Do not compare rent alone if taxes, healthcare, transport, childcare or currency exchange also change. A salary can look higher while disposable income falls.
Limitations
It does not adjust for tax systems, benefits, currency exchange, household size, savings goals or lifestyle changes.
