Estimate body surface area using several common formulas and compare the spread between methods.
Method
Mosteller uses the square root of height times weight divided by 3600. Du Bois and Haycock are included because BSA formula choice can matter in clinical contexts.
Example
For 175 cm and 75 kg, the Mosteller formula gives sqrt(175 x 75 / 3600), or about 1.91 m2.
Common mistakes
Use centimeters and kilograms for the metric formulas shown. Do not use a BSA estimate for medication dosing unless the clinical protocol calls for that formula.
Limitations
This page does not recommend a dosing method. Always follow the formula specified in the relevant clinical protocol or medication label.
